Proposed and Existing Developments and Applied Permits

Great Job !!!

1) Permit applications submitted by Cliffs at Mountain Park pending DHEC and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approval are as follows:

A)Permit # SC0048682- NPDES Direct Discharge permit-  On June 24,2008

SC DHEC sent out official notice that the permit applicant has WITHDRAWN their application to discharge treated wastewater to the North Saluda River. The applicant is still pursuing a land application permit for the treated wastewater . If SC DHEC issues a land application permit, there will be a hearing regarding that topic.

B) Permit #2007-1312-6J-401 certification and 404 permit for river modification- UPDATE – On May 29, 2008 a request to SC DHEC for a Final Review of the above permit was filed by 10 individuals and the Conservation Coalition of  Save Our Saluda, Sierra Club, South Carolina Native Plant Society, South Carolina Wildlife Federation, Trout Unlimited and Upstate Forever.  On June 24,2008, the SC DHEC Board approved to hold a Final Review conference to address the concerns of those who filed appeals for the review conference. This Review Conference is scheduled for July 10,2008. This permit would allow for modification of a portion of the North Saluda and impoundment and piping of  some small tributaries. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have voiced strong concerns about the environmental impact that would occur with alteration of the river’s course and the disturbance of the riparian buffer. Disturbance and loss of riparian buffer areas will increase stream turbidity and water temperature. The construction of 16 golf cart bridges will impact the river with increased sedimentation which is harmful to the aquatic species found in the river.

Save our Saluda Action-
The Save Our Saluda petition and letter writing campaign in opposition to the above permits, was VERY Successful . This outcry spoke loudly to SC DHEC that concerned citizens care about their rivers and will insist that the regulations in place to protect our rivers be enforced. In two months over 2,300 concerned citizens signed the petition and over 800 individuals sent letters of opposition to SC DHEC.
