2010 Fall River clean-up- Sept. 18th

The Sept. 18th river sweep will be held from 9:30 am until noon. Assignments and instructions will be given for sections of the South and Middle Saluda River areas.


Meet at the parking area at the intersection of Hwy 276 and Hwy 11, approximately 5 miles west of Cleveland and approx. 1/2 miles west of the Wildcat Falls Wayside. Bring gloves and wear clothing and shoes/boots to protect you from poison ivy ,etc. Bags for trash will be provided .Participants under age 18 must have a parent/ guardian be in attendance at the event.Any participants wanting to bring a kayak or canoe must wear a life vest and enter the water at their own risk. The majority of the trash/ litter is usually  on the riverbanks and  land at the fishing access areas. All participants are required to sign waiver release form.

 

2010 Meetings

January 7th, Thursday at 7pm- Slater Rec Hall- Annual Meeting
and 2nd year Birthday Party celebration.
A review of the past two years of activities of protecting  the Saluda watershed will be presented via a short powerpoint  and video presentation. Refreshments will be served.

Past meetings and events

November 10th- 7PM  SOS community meeting at Slater Rec Hall, Slater.
 The guest speaker  , Larry Dyck, PhD (retired Clemson professor) from Shoreline Restoration Services, talked about restoration techniques that property owners can utilize to help stabilize their  riverbanks. The power point presentation contained very good examples of techniques that can be used in a restoration project.Visual assessment of the riverbanks and surrounding area of the  water monitoring sites was also discussed. 


September 19th- "River sweep" litter pick- Seventeen volunteers helped pick up over 300 pounds of trash along the South and Middle Saluda Rivers.
September 19th -the "Music for Clean Water Fundraiser" was held at  The Cafe' at Williams Hardware in Travelers Rest. Over 30 supporters enjoyed the music of Rachel VanSlyke and friends .  Many people purchased tickets for a chance to win one of the the 20 door prizes to help this event be a success.


September 14th at 7pm at the Slater Rec Hall.  Dr. Weston Dripps ,hydrologist from Furman University, talked about the effects of urbanization and stormwater runoff.  Methods to help minimize the impacts of urbanization were discussed.
